Aquaporin-4: A Potential Therapeutic Target for Cerebral Edema

Aquaporin-4 (AQP4) is a family member of water-channel proteins and is dominantly expressed in the foot process of glial cells surrounding capillaries. The predominant expression at the boundaries between cerebral parenchyma and major fluid compartments suggests the function of aquaporin-4 in water transfer into and out of the brain parenchyma. Accumulating evidences have suggested that the dys...

The time course changes in expression of aquaporin 4 and aquaporin 1 following global cerebral ischemic edema in rat

BACKGROUND The aim of this global cerebral ischemia study was to study the changes in expression levels of aquaporin 4 (AQP4) and AQP1 over time. METHODS Sprague-Dawley type male rats were divided into six groups. Sham group and ischemia/reperfusion were performed on five other groups using the four-vessel occlusion model. Reperfusion was done 30 min after the occlusion, and each group was te...

CEREBRAL EDEMA: A RARE COMPLICATION IN GALACTOSEMIA

A 34 day-old girl infant was admitted for poor feeding and cholestasis. She had a bulging fontanelle, with no evidence of intracranial infection or hemorrhage. Investigations demonstrated that she had galactosemia. Computed tomographic scans demonstrated the presence of diffuse cerebral edema. After treatment the edema resolved.

Lack of sex-linked differences in cerebral edema and aquaporin-4 expression after experimental stroke.

Aquaporin-4 (AQP4) has been shown to be important in the evolution of stroke-associated cerebral edema. However, the role of AQP4 in stroke-associated cerebral edema as it pertains to sex has not been previously studied. The perivascular pool of AQP4 is important in the influx and efflux of water during focal cerebral ischemia. We used mice with targeted disruption of the gene encoding alpha-sy...

Overactivation of corticotropin-releasing factor receptor type 1 and aquaporin-4 by hypoxia induces cerebral edema.

Cerebral edema is a potentially life-threatening illness, but knowledge of its underlying mechanisms is limited. Here we report that hypobaric hypoxia induces rat cerebral edema and neuronal apoptosis and increases the expression of corticotrophin releasing factor (CRF), CRF receptor type 1 (CRFR1), aquaporin-4 (AQP4), and endothelin-1 (ET-1) in the cortex. These effects, except for the increas...
